Donna Hylton, A Little Piece of Light

Donna Hylton spent 27 years behind bars, including two and a half in solitary confinement. After her release from prison, she founded A Little Piece of Light, an organization named after her memoir that helps women re-enter society. Front Porch raised her profile as a women’s rights activist, criminal justice reform advocate, author and public speaker while emphasizing issues around incarcerated women. Donna’s personal story was the driving force behind our media strategy and shaped compelling national narratives including why the number of incarcerated women is soaring and what needs to change; the urgent fight for criminal justice and prison reform; how a lack of diversity in our judicial system impacts justice; breaking barriers: housing, wellness, education, and jobs for formerly incarcerated women. We collaborated with numerous advocacy and political groups and thought-leaders on campaigns such as #LessIsMoreNY, an Act Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law and coverage included The New York Times, Letter to the Editor, PBS NewsHour, The 19th, Cheddar TVWNBC 4 New York, PIX11 New York, BronxNet Television, Gotham Gazette, and MS Magazine Op-Ed.
